Fred Veigel (October 13, 1929 - March 2014) was the longtime head of the Huron Valley Central Labor Council. He served on the Washtenaw County Board of Road Commissioners from 1991 until his death in 2014.

VEIGEL, FRED J. Ann Arbor, MI

Born October 13, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio to Fred and Frances (Kirstein) Veigel. Moved to Ann Arbor, MI in July 1937, graduated Ann Arbor High School in 1947, where he lettered in track, baseball, and football (also, co-captain). Army Airborne, discharged in 1951 honorably for a knee injury incurred on his 3rd jump. He loved to hunt, fish, golf, and played hockey until age 34 (sustained shoulder separation). One of his proudest accomplishments was starting the 1st senior hockey team in Ann Arbor ('56), played two years in the Canadian Customs Hockey League (Windsor and Riverside, Ontario), played two years in ISH League-Senior B, won league championship ('59-'60), undefeated, and Detroit Senior Hockey ('61-'63). Fred wore many hats: Michigan State Normal College Police Officer ('53-'59), IBEW Apprentice Electrician ('54-'58), Journeyman Electrician ('59-'97). He held three positions with HVCLC-AFL-CIO: V.P. ('66-'68), Treasurer ('68-'69), and President Emeritus ('69-'13). Appointed Washtenaw County Road Commissioner ('91-'14), Washtenaw County Parks Commissioner ('98-'14). Fred was a loyal, dedicated Democrat, and proud to be an American. He was a Union Leader, fierce and strong, supporting the blue collar worker, helping anyone and everyone, from all walks of life. He was a mentor to many, lived to resolve the issues of the world (especially at the Fletcher Forum). He was quite the character, who will be missed by many. Fred is survived by his daughters, Karen Veigel-Coon (Ron), Teri Veigel-Nims; son, David Veigel; grandchildren, Travis (Danielle) Nims and Crystal Nims; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Morgan Nims; his stepson, Dr. Michael Roopas (Jonna) and daughter Samantha. He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Angeline Roopas Veigel. Visitation will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 12-4:00 PM and 6-9:00 PM and Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 11-3:00 PM and 5-8:00 PM at the Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. The funeral will be held Monday, March 10, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 3109 Scio Church Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48103, burial to follow at Bethlehem Cemetery.
