Meijer is a massive grocery and department store chain, based in Grand Rapids. Store formats are similar to the younger Wal-Mart chains-and in fact started with this format in 1962, long before Wal-Mart began venturing into this business in the 1980's-featuring not only food and alcohol items but just about anything else you could want, all under one roof---a hypermarket. Most Meijer stores are open 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, closing only on Christmas Day.
There are three Meijer stores in the Ann Arbor area:
- Store 27: 3825 Carpenter Road, at Ellsworth Road, in Pittsfield Township. Called "Ypsilanti" or "Carpenter Road Meijer". Opened on February 2, 1972. Served by AATA buses 5, 6, and the new 67.
- Store 64: 3145 Ann Arbor-Saline Road, at Oak Valley Drive, near I-94, on the other side of Pittsfield Township. Called "Saline Road Meijer". Opened on March 14, 1989. Served by 16.
- Store 173: 5645 Jackson Road at Zeeb Road, in Scio Township. Called "Zeeb Road" or "Jackson Road Meijer". Opened on May 20, 2001. Served by the Washtenaw WAVE bus, with a connection to AATA Route 9. Note plans to extend and renumber the 9 to serve the store starting May 2016.

History of the name
A former name for the Meijer store chain is Meijer's. Although the possessive was dropped in 1966, many people still use it, as with other businesses named for people, such as "Ford's".
An earlier name was Meijer's Thrifty Acres, which got remixed into Meijer's Shifty Takers (or Shifty Fakers).
