Ohio is the 17th state of the United States of America. Long ago the Iroquois people named the river that forms the southern and eastern boundaries the state with a word that sounded like “O-Y-O”, meaning “great water.” The state is sometimes called the "Buckeye State” due to the plentiful buckeye trees that grow there. The capitol is located in Columbus, which coincidentally is the home of The Ohio State University, a perennial rival to the University of Michigan. Michigan had actually fought with Ohio over the area that is now Toledo, but we were given the Upper Peninsula instead. Not a bad deal.
