This garden is located behind the Ypsilanti Senior Center on Congress Rd. It is a Neighborhood Garden that rents out plots. The garden steward is Lisa Bashert.
The Recreation Park Community Garden contains 20 full- and half-plots that are offered for summer rental. All gardening is organic and the garden contains two waist-high cedar raised beds for the use of seniors. Rec Park Community Garden participates in the national Plant-a-Row for the Hungry campaign, donating all produce raised in a dedicated plot to Food Gatherers for distribution to food pantries county-wide.
The Rec Park Community Garden was developed in association with Growing Hope, the Normal Park Neighborhood Association and the City of Ypsilanti. In addition to Rec Park Community Garden, there are three other westside Ypsilanti gardens with rental plots: Gateway Community Garden, Midtown Community Garden and West Middle School Community Garden. Other rental plots are available elsewhere in the city, such as Frog Island Community Garden, and more being created every day. Growing Hope has sponsored 26 such gardens and projects in and around Ypsilanti since being incorporated as a nonprofit in 2005.
