Vinology, located at 110 S. Main in Ann Arbor, is the sister business to Vinotecca, which opened one year previously in Royal Oak, MI. Both were started by John and Kristin Jonna, former proprietors of Merchants of Vino (now owned by Whole Foods) and current proprietors of Merchants Fine Wine.
Both locations serve a wide variety of reasonably priced wines by the glass, as well as a range of import and domestic beers. Each restaurant features a tapas food menu and has a retail wine shop in the basement.
Neither restaurant should be confused with vinology.com, which is the primary website for The Wine School of Philadelphia.
Reviews
Leonardo took over the kitchen at Vinology, owned by wine-family scion Kristin Jonna, last December, following chef Robert Courser, who filled in when previous chef Brandon Johns left for farm-to-table Grange Kitchen & Bar, practically around the corner.
Came out Friday night for our second visit. The first was over a year ago and besides the cheese board and wine, everything else was "eh" at best. Glad we gave it a second go-round because the new chef seems to have made some changes for the better. We were seated quickly and then our waiter stopped by to introduce himself and start us out. He was excellent with a good sense of the menu as well as ideas for wine pairings. (4 star review in 2010)
- Roving Fork: Vinology, April 2009
To their credit, Vinology is a beautiful venue, from it’s old school front face to it’s modern yet rustic interior. It is at its heart a wine bar. They should stop trying to be something else. Stick with the small plates (they’re all small anyway) and get some cheese on a wood board on this menu. Hell, it can even be local cheese.
