Food Sources
The food provided at Interfaith Food Pantry is sourced from a variety of places including: individuals from Blacksburg and McCoy’s backyard gardens (predominantly in the summer), Virginia Tech farms, Sinkland Farm, Kroger, Food Lion, and occasionally local restaurants such as Mellow Mushroom, Chipotle, Panera, Pizza Hut, and Gobble Cakes cupcakes. When local produce is donated, as well as produce from chain grocery stores, it is hand inspected by volunteers to determine whether or not the product is suitable to offer to food pantry recipients. In general, volunteers use their best judgment.
In order to ensure enough food to each food pantry client, clients are given a checklist that varies weekly which indicates the number of each item they are able to take from the pantry that week. This list is variable on the amount of product that is available, and may include household items in cases where household goods are donated.
Transportation
Food is transported to the food pantry by individuals. Volunteers from the food pantry use their own personal vehicles to transport food from the grocery stores, while farmers, community gardeners, and restaurants bring their product to the food pantry.
