Route 5 is an east-west New York State Highway that runs parallel to the Thruway and directly through Buffalo.
NY State Hwy 5 heads east from downtown Erie, PA and enters New York iat the PA/NY border west of Ripley. In New York it runs east along Lake Erie through Dunkirk and Silver Creek in Chautauqua County to Brant in Erie County, sometimes overlapping Route 20.
Route 5 takes on the name Erie Road as it passes Angola and Highland-on-the-Lake, where it becomes Lake Shore Road. In Woodlawn it intersects with the Mile Strip Expressway and heads north through Lackawanna taking on the name Hamburg Expressway and then becomes the Buffalo Skyway. The skyway crosses over the City Ship Canal and the Bufalo River to enter downtown Buffalo.

A number of streets, all marked as Route 5(!), eventually converge into Main St, which proceeds through Buffalo to
Easterm Segment
Williamsville, Clarence, Pembroke, East Pembroke, Bushville and Batavia.
