Established during the earlier years of the cold war the air force base was primarily used as part of the Los Angeles area air defense. The high school mascot is named after the F-89 Scorpions that were stationed at the base when the school opened in 1956.
The property was acquired by the county and eventually turned into the Camarillo Airport
