Pathway: A path, usually paved, that is located separately from a road. An example in Chattanooga of a bike pathway is the Riverwalk
Protected Lane: A painted bike lane on a road that is separated from traffic from some type of protective barrier, such as bollards or parked cars. See an example of Chicago's Protected Bike Lanes or the proposed protected bike lane on Broad St
Lane: A painted bike lane on a road. While not offering physical protection, bike lanes give drivers a clearer sense of the space reserved for cyclists.
Route: A designated route where bicyclists share space with car drivers. Most appropriate on lower-traffic, slower-speed streets, we also see them on roads that lack the space needed for a full lane.
