Lucy Gayheart is Willa Cather's eleventh novel, published in 1935. When it begins, its heroine is already dead - she's Lucy, a girl who moves from Nebraska to Chicago to play the piano, where she falls in love with Clement Sebastian, the opera singer she accompanies. The book then doubles back and catches up to that first final scene. In-between, a wide cast of vibrant characters work and adventure around Chicago and small-town Nebraska, as well as Europe and New York. Together they paint a rich, complicated picture of what and how Lucy loves, and the people who love her.
