After a stint as assistant city manager for Concord, Greg Jones served as Chico's assistant city manager in 2004 and stepped up to City Manager shortly thereafter. He left in late 2007 to be the city manager of Hayward — where he could be closer to his family in the bay area.

He served as an officer in the United States Air Force after graduating from Central Washington University with a BS in business administration. He then attained a Masters in public administration from CSU Hayward.
