The Rare Book & Manuscript Library (RBML) was established in 1936. It contains nearly half a million volumes and over three kilometers of manuscript material. The Rare Book and Manuscript Library is the principal repository for early manuscripts, rare books, and literary manuscripts in the broad fields of literature, history, art, theology, technology, theater, and the natural sciences.
The library also contains modern literary archival material and personal papers related to Gwendolyn Brooks, H.G. Wells, Carl Sandburg, Marcel Proust, John Ruskin, and Lewis Carroll, among others.
