Mrs. Gray came to Champaign with her husband in 1943. She has been an active member of Bethel AME Church and is also interested in politics. In the 1950s she was Urbana committeewoman for the Republican Party. In noting the changes that have occurred in the twin cities, she recalled in 1983, "It was very prejudiced when we came here. Housing was segregated. We couldn't eat in a lot of restaurants. Black students couldn't live on campus."
