Acme Theatre Company is an non-profit community theatre group for young artists of high school age. Its mission is to present plays of high literary quality while providing opportunities for young people to learn various acting and technical skills. Acme Theatre Company is an organization run entirely by the young people themselves under the direction of a small cadre of adult mentors.
Acme is open to all graduated 8th - 12th grade students in the Davis and Yolo County area. There is no cost to participate in the company. Auditions are held prior to each production.
Acme performs in a variety of locations including the Veteran's Memorial Theatre, the Brunelle Theatre, and Pamela Trowkanski's Dance Workshop. Annually over Memorial Day Weekend, a free outdoor performance is given as a gift to the town of Davis for its many years of support. For many years, these performances were held on the Pence Gallery stage, which disappeared with the gallery renovation. Currently, performances are held on the outdoor stage behind the Davis Art Center.
For further information, contact Artistic Director, Emily Henderson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
In addition, the members of Acme are the directors/producers of theatre classes for K-8 students, which are offered through the Davis Arts Center. These classes are lots of fun with small shows performed by the kids as the finale of each class.
GROSS INDECENCY: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde
By Moises Kaufman
The true story of famed author Oscar Wilde, who in 1895 was accused of posing as a “sodomite” by the father of his young companion, Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas. Wilde fought the scandalous and questionable charge, but the tables quickly turned, and he found himself defending his career, art, morality, and ultimately, his life. Playwright Moises Kaufman, author of The Laramie Project, weaves together news articles, biographies, and interviews to recreate the harsh reality of Victorian past, but also create new light and relevancy on the downfall of the 19th Century’s most famous playwright and novelist, and his unquestioning view on the acts of love and beauty.
