Sigma Alpha Mu
Sigma Alpha Mu (often shortened to SAM, and referred to as "Sammies") is a social fraternity at UC Davis. Sigma Alpha Mu was founded in 1909 by eight young men of the Jewish faith. Our fraternity history tells a story about strong moral ethics and ideals of brotherhood. For example, in 1927, the fraternity investigated Jewish student persecution in Romania and helped stop further assaults in the county. Our full history can be read here. The fraternity further opened its arms to men of all faith in 1953 and today Sigma Alpha Mu has over 50 active chapters and 7 colonies across the United States and Canada.
Chapter History
Established in 1979 as one of the oldest fraternity at UC Davis, Sigma Alpha Mu has been one of the most diverse and humble fraternity on campus which holds high regards to close knit bonds of brotherhood. Sigma Alpha Mu accepts members of all backgrounds and fosters their growth in becoming well-rounded men.
Creed
“To foster and maintain among its sons a spirit of fraternity, a spirit of mutual moral aid and support; to instill and maintain in the hearts of its sons love for and loyalty to Alma Mater and its ideals; to inculcate among its sons such ideals as will result in actions worthy of the highest precepts of true manhood, democracy, and humanity.”
About us
Philanthropy
Part of Sigma Alpha Mu’s mission is to give back to the community. So alongside community service, philanthropy is a major part of our public outreach for our chapter.
Nationally, Sigma Alpha Mu supports the Alzheimer’s Association – The Judy Fund in their fight to help create Alzheimer’s survivorship for future generation. This fund was established in memory of the deceased wife of a fraternity alumni.
Sigma Alpha Mu has donated over $550,000 in cumulative to the Judy Fund over the past years.
Social
Sigma Alpha Mu offers members the opportunity to meet and network with people within and outside of IFC Greek Life because of our wide array of brothers who come from different backgrounds and participate in different on-campus activities.
Sammy’s believe in having fun and fostering lifelong relationships with sororities, women’s athletic teams, and other recognized female organizations by regularly hosting mixers, philanthropy events, and more.
Scholarship
While considering to join a fraternity, schoolwork and grades are often a concern for students as well as parents. We at Sigma Alpha Mu consider education our top priority. For this reason, the Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation was created in 1944 and currently provides brothers across the country with over $220,000 in scholarship every year.
All undergrads, including seniors, can apply for scholarships. Scholarships range from $500-$5000, depending on the scholarship awarded. Within the years 2010-2016, Sigma Alpha Mu has distributed over $1,250,000 in scholarships alone.
All SAM candidates that receive over 3.75/4.0 GPA the quarter they join are recognized by the Young Scholars Program. Young Scholars receive recognition and a $500 award.
