The Environmental Protection Agency's Local Food, Local Places began in 2014. It grew out of a successful, similar program that solely focused on Appalachia. This initiative is focused on creating healthy, vibrant communities, via local food system development.

Local Food, Local Places is a multi-agency effort, supported by the EPA, theU.S. Department of Agriculture, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, theU.S. Department of Transportation, the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Delta Regional Authority, and the White House Rural Council.
