Texas Jack is an unofficial Denton Landmark and was the barbeque pit of Joe Amos Amyx, who started cooking in his first BBQ Cookoff in 1977 in the Denton North Texas State Fair, in which he won first place. Texas Jack is a Jackalope, or his antlers may be removed to make him a jack rabbit. The tail opens for the fire, the belly opens for the meat, the smoke escapes from the ears, and the grease drips from the brass appendage located between two brass balls between his back legs. Texas Jack is now located just off the Denton Square on the east side at the historic Alsup House. Mike Alsup acquired Texas Jack and relocated it here for all to see.
