The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation is a private non-profit organization founded in 1978 with its goal to help businesses create new jobs and use private investment in the City of Detroit. It provides technical, financial and development assistance to the city and businesses of all sizes, from start-up entrepreneurs to multinational corporations.
The DEGC also provides staff services to the city’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (DBRA), Economic Development Corporation (EDC), Neighborhood Development Corporation (NDC), Local Development Finance Authority (LDFA), and Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA).
Members of the board are appointed by the mayor and approved by the council.
Old Tiger Stadium & Chevrolet
In 2011, the DEGC rejected several plans the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy and Chevrolet to develop the Old Tiger Stadium site. The DEGC and Chevrolet are in talks to rehabilitate other baseball diamonds in the city instead.
Woodward Light Rail
In September 2011, Dave Bing was planning on proposing to move control of the Woodward Light Rail project to the DEGC.
