The University of Michigan has several programs focused on Detroit

Detroit Center

The U-M Detroit Center at Woodward and Mack has classrooms, offices, meeting space, an art gallery, architecture studios, and other shared space. U-M departments can request space for their programs.

A 1-semester undergraduate program for students in the college of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Students live in Wayne State dorms, take classes at the U-M Detroit Center, and have internships at local nonprofits.

Urban Planning

Students often complete projects that focus on the Metro area.

The University helped develop the Detroit Residential Parcel Survey with Data Driven Detroit.

2011-12 Cluster Hire

In May 2011, the University approved a cluster hire of four faculty members who will focus on the metro area. The faculty will work in the Department of Afroamerican & African Studies (DAAS), the Department of Sociology, the Urban and Regional Planning Program in Taubman College, the School of Social Work, and in conjunction with the Residential College.

Academic focuses will be:

  • Racial stratification
  • Unequal access to resources
