1994 Tour

This house was built in 1867 - one year following the end of the Civil War. It is a vernacularstyle which means it is a local expression of a particular building type. It borrows elements of the Greek Revival style which features a front gabled shape to echo the faade of a Greek temple. Gable-front houses are well suited to narrow urban lots. The round arch attic window is a design element borrowed from the Italianate style. Queen Anne or Colonial Revival detailing are also often found on a vernacular house. The original owner, Dr. Blair, had this home built as a very basic house for a gentlemanfarmer on approximately 20 acres of land -- his own "Little House on the Prairie". Following his death in 1871, his widow divided the property and sold off the lots.
