City Council is the nine-member, non-partisan governing body of the City of Greensboro.

HISTORY

1810: North Carolina General Assembly ratifies "An Act to regulate the Police of the Town of Greensborough, in the County of Guilford, and for other purposes."

14 January 1837: North Carolina General Assembly ratifies "An Act to incorporate the town of Greensborough, in the county of Guilford."

1921: City adopts council-manager form of government

1949: first woman, Juliette Dwigins, elected to City Council

1951: first African-American, William Hampton, elected to City Council

1973: first direct election for Mayor

1983: first African-American woman, Katie Dorsett, elected to City Council

1993: first woman, Carolyn Allen, elected as Mayor

2007: first African-American, Yvonne Johnson, elected as Mayor

2017: first openly gay person, Michelle Kennedy, elected to City Council
