About Us
History
The Newport News Public Library system originated at the West Avenue Library location. The library originated in January 1891 by the Subscription Library Association as a subscription-based library. In 1914, the Library Association Board increased the fee to 50 cents a year and the Newport News Shipyard donated $20 per month. Later in 1917, the city of Newport News began to support the library by supplying $10 per month, which was the start of a public-private partnership that lasted until 1968.1
