The IB Free Market is like a swap meet or a rummage sale, but everything is free, and there is no bartering! It is powered by goodwill, is 100% free, and non-commercial. Free markets help build community, reduce waste, and allow neighbors to share in a fun and friendly environment. There is no cost to participate.
So what do you do at a free market?
You can bring small, usable items you no longer need, or simply take home a new treasure or two. You can even offer services like free bike repair or tax help. For example, at the IB Free Market #2 on January 23rd, 2016, a Covered California certified enrollment counselor will be helping people get enrolled in a health plan!
What to bring...
All those homegrown avocados you could never eat on your own, clothes that no longer say "you", small appliances, tools, books, plants, toys, etc.--just no furniture, please! Don't have anything to share right now? No problem! Just spread the word, or bring something to a future market.
So what do you do with things that are left over?
All items left at the end of the day are donated to the Disabled American Veterans Thrift Store. We like working with them because they have a noble mission, run a popular and affordable thrift store, and are very professional and punctual.
History of the Free Market
This fun local tradition started in 2014 as the vision of local residents inspired by the San Diego Really Really Free Market in City Heights. The idea of the Free Market aligned with the mission of the IB United Methodist Church to build community through love and mutual aid, so the church became the home base and a major organizing force behind the market.
Want to start your own Free Market?
Please call the IB United Methodist Church at 619-424-5181 and ask to be connected with Vicky, who can guide you through how we organized our market. You are welcome to use and modify any of the language and media here for your own free market.
