The Isla Vista Recreation and Park District is IV's only form of self-government, managing a couple dozen parks and more. There is a very wonderful long history of it written in 1999 by Christina A. Ziegler-McPherson: 'More Than Just Parks': The Isla Vista Recreation & Park District, 1972-1998. Isla Vista: A Citizen's History by Carmen Lodise also discusses the IVRPD in detail.
