About FACT

FACT, the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, commissions, exhibits, and promotes "artists' work and innovation in the fields of film, video, and new media." The Centre has four floors and houses galleries, a cinema, a cafe, a bar, a store, and an education area. Admission is free to the Centre.

FACT has officially become one of my favourites because the Box has fantastic new sofas! Screening a heady mix of independent, world and mainstream cinema. Thursdays and Wednesday are often the days to pay a visit, good coffee and a friendly social scene - catch emerging artist film and video, world cinema or join a film course and argue that Steve Guttenberg is the new Steve McQueen. Staff are friendly and informed and the shop is quite an Aladdin's cave with DVD deals, cool zines and books.

The Gallery

Currant Exhibition

Persistence of Vision Informed by scientific research and inspired by historical developments in media technology, Persistence of Vision explores the interplay of vision, memory and media. Presenting contemporary artists’ works that repurpose current image technologies as well as those of our recent past, it playfully reviews and re-imagines the devices through which our memories are stored and revived. A family-friendly drop-in space in the Media Lounge provides hands-on activities where visitors can see how vision is shaped by memory, and how memory is influenced by how and what we see.

Exhibition delivered in partnership with Nikolaj Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, Denmark.

Picture House at FACT

From mainstream films to Art-house The cinema shows mainstream and art-house movies. The cinema is run by the Picturehouse group and aims to offer an alternative film going experience, screening world cinema to the latest blockbuster, and The Met Opera, National Theater, and Royal Opera - (Live broadcast). It is managed by FACT, city-wide tenants and Arena Housing, a registered Social Landlord formed in 2001 and responsible for over 14,000 properties across the North West of England. This unique collaboration enables all parties to explore issues around contemporary ways of living and ways of seeing. tenantspin commenced in 1999 as a pilot project. Palm d’Or winner Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives came out of an exhibition at Liverpool’s FACT May 25 2010 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL’S FACT was celebrating today after a film created as part of an exhibition at the Wood Street arts centre was awarded the highest accolade at Cannes.

Thai film-maker Apichatpong ‘Joe’ Weerasekthakul won the Palme d’Or with his film Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives.

The movie was born from the Primative exhibition - Weerasekthakul’s first solo UK show - held at FACT last September as a major part of the Abandon Normal Devices festival.

Mike Stubbs, director of FACT, said today: “We’re thrilled Apichatpong Weerasekthakul has won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and very proud here at FACT to be part of the Primitive project.

“Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives was conceived as an integral part of the Primitive project, which includes the seven screen gallery installation of the same name co-commissioned by FACT and shown here as part of Abandon Normal Devices.”

The multi-screen video installation Primate was commissioned by FACT, in partnership with Haus der Kunst, Munich and Animate Projects, London.
