The Five Mile River is the river in Rowayton which forms part of the boundary of Norwalk with Darien. The river runs through New Canaan, Norwalk and Darien, before emptying into the Long Island Sound. The river’s drainage basin covers approximately 12 or 13 square miles. The name dates back at least as early as 1656 as "five mill river." This is most likely a spelling error, as there were no mills on the river at the time. 1
