176 Athol is a mid-sized apartment building built c.1930. It was sometimes referred to as El Cortez Apartments, a name shared with a larger building on 38th Street. An early ad calls it Castile Del Lago, 1 though that name hasn't been found elsewhere.
The 1950 Sanborn shows it having 9 apartments.

In 1951, Paula Ruth Garrard and her husband George Garrard lived there. George was killed along with 2 others in a dramatic mid-air collision at Oakland Airport. 2
