The 55th and Market Traffic Light was installed on August 1, 1967, as a result of a community initiative spearheaded by the Black Panther Party. The event is commemorated with a small sign.
The traffic light was much needed because the intersection was dangerous for children headed to and from nearby Santa Fe Elementary.
