The Oakland Agassiz Society was an organization in the late 1800s to encourage children to study nature. The local society was founded in by Dr. Chloe Annette Buckel. 2 In 1890, Simeon P. Meads was the director. 1

The society was named for Swiss naturalist Louis Agassiz. There were numerous Agassiz Societies or Agassiz Associations around the country, formed for the purpose of studying biology. Ernest Hemingway was a member of one.
