General Email Address

Even Start provides a comprehensive family literacy program in several Oakland neighborhood locations. The program improves adult literacy, enabling parents to better address their children’s educational needs. Parents can take advantage of GED preparation, ESL instruction, job skills training, and parenting information workshops on such topics as language development and school readiness. This family literacy program offers children early childhood instruction while their parents participate in on-site classes. Family field trips and other parent and child activities are also part of the learning program.

Honoring that every parent is their child’s first and most important teacher, the City of Oakland, Even Start Program bridges Child, Family, School, and Community through:

  • Adult Education
  • Early Childhood Enrichment
  • Parenting Education
  • Parent & Child Interactive Literacy Activities (PACT)
  • Oakland families with at least one child in the family, birth through seven years of age
  • One adult in the family who has an education need or goal (e.g. preparing for their GED certificate, High School Diploma, or to improve their English language skills)
  • At least one parent and one or more children willing to participate in all program components (Early Childhood Education, Adult Education, Parenting), and attend at least 90% of the classes
  • Families who qualify as low-income
