Fountain was the Vice President of the Oakland Fruit & Produce Co.1 He appears frequently in references to horticulture and produce growing in the Bay Area in the late 1800s. He was especially noted for his orchard of 1060 dwarf fruit trees which were very uniformly sized as well as his 900 strawberry plants.2 "He resided on a small fruit farm on the east side of Broadway and running from about Sixteenth street to Twentieth street. His residence was near where the post office now stands. Mr. and Mrs. Fountain made a fine looking couple and they had eleven fine looking children, all girls except two."3
