Clínica de La Raza was formed in 1971. Before La Clínica de La Raza was established, low-income residents, especially Latino and Chicano in the Fruitvale and the rest of the East Bay, had few options available to them for affordable health care. As a result, many were forced to go to hospital emergency rooms for problems that could have been avoided with adequate care. In response to this gap in services, a group of concerned health practitioners, community activists and students came together in 1971 to establish a multi-service clinic based on the needs expressed by the community. Initially staffed by five volunteers and supported by a group of concerned students, health professionals and community activists, La Clínica began to offer free medical care. As people learned about La Clínica, additional dental, optical, and mental health students and professionals began volunteering at the clinic. Satellite clinics were eventually established in other Oakland communities as La Clínica's reputation brought it increased funding.
