Lactarius rubidus, commonly known as the candy cap is an edible mushroom which grows under coast live oak.   When dried, it smells strongly like maple syrup.  It is often used in recipes that call for maple flavor, such as cheesecake and ice cream.

In Oakland, Lactarius rubidus has been documented from Redwood Regional Park, Joaquin Miller Park, Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve and several smaller parks which have coast live oak trees.Lactarius rubidus by Alan RockefellerLactarius rubidus spores 1000x in melzers reagent by Alan Rockefeller
