Maxine Hong Kingston (born October 27, 1940) is an author of a number of notable works about gender and ethnicity, and a professor emerita at U. C. Berkeley.
In the early 1960s Ms. Kingston earned her teaching credentials from University of California, Berkeley, then went on to work at Oakland Technical High School as a student teacher. She then taught at Sunset High School in Hayward from 1965 to 1967. 1
Kingston lost her home in the 1991 Oakland hills fire. 2
In 2014, Kingston was awarded the National Medal of Arts from President Obama.
