The New Deal was a series of Federal programs beginning in 1933 in response to the Great Depression. The programs put millions to work, and upgraded and built numerous roads and buildings around the country through the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Public Works Administration (PWA). The WPA projects were smaller and used mostly unskilled labor, and the PWA projects were larger, like dams and bridges.
