The Sea Wolf is a 1904 novel by Jack London. The protagonist of the book serves aboard a seal hunting ship, much as London did aboard the Sophia Sutherland. Based on the success of London's first novel, The Call of the Wild, his second book sold out before it was printed.
A number of things in Oakland have been named for The Sea Wolf, including:
- The Sea Wolf Restaurant (where Scott's is now)
- the OFD fireboat, Sea-Wolf
- The Seawolf Public House
The book has been adapted into a movie for theaters and TV numerous times. 1
It wasn't just the general setting of a sealing ship that London wrote about; Wolf Larsen, the cruel but intelligent captain in The Sea Wolf was based in part on a real person, Captain Alexander McLean. 2
