The USS Oakland was a WWII anti-aircraft cruiser. It launched in 1942 and was part of the US Navy until 1949, and earned 9 battle stars. It was scrapped in 1959, but the mainmast and nameplate were salvaged and presented to the city in 1965. The mainmast was displayed at Jack London Square for about 30 years, but the mainmast was restored and they were moved to a prominent display at Middle Harbor Shoreline Park in 2003.
