What is WHUP FM:

WHUP FM is a community radio station based in Hillsborough, NC.  Serving Hillsborough and the surrounding community with original programing for both local and worldwide audiences.  Locally the radio station can be heard on 104.7 FM and audiences from around the globe can listen live via the mobile app Tune-In

“WHUP's vision is consistent with that of excellent community stations around the country – present a high-quality, eclectic, host-driven mix of music and conversation that collectively reflects the community we serve, with an emphasis on local and regional talent. That space has largely been abandoned by large commercial and public broadcasters, so we have plenty of room in which to operate without fear of overlap!” – WHUP FM About

Since launching on October 11, 2015, WHUP FM has received news coverage both locally and nationally.  The North Carolina based Indy Week wrote an article titled “Small Town, Small Station, Big Signal: How Hillsborough's WHUP-FM Has Become One of the Triangle's Best Experiments.” The article discusses the volunteers who run the radio station and their events, to the avant-garde programming that makes the non-profit unique.

The travel section of the New York Times paid a visit to the small town of Hillsborough, with an estimated population of 6,400, shortly after WHUP FM launched.  The article discusses the impressive food scene and craft brewery’s in Hillsborough, that draw crowds in from neighboring cities Durham, Chapel-Hill and the state capital Raleigh.  WHUP FM is mentioned in the article saying, “New projects keep surfacing in Hillsborough, like an independent community radio station, WHUP 104.7 FM, which took the air in October.”
