Village District, formerly known as Cameron Village, in Raleigh was built by J.W. York in 1947 and opened in 1949. Known as the first shopping center built on the east coast, Village District was also a planned residential neighborhood. Homes are a mix of townhomes, apartments, and single family homes. Currently nominated for the National Register of Historic Places, Village District contains many mid-century modern ranch homes.
Village District is also known as the "mecca of ITB shopping".
In the 1970's and 80's, there was an area (now located underneath the current Village District Library) called The Village Subway where bands played.
