Hillsborough Street is a cultural and social artery running through West Raleigh. Hosting three different colleges and a wide array of night life, landmarks and restaurants, Hillsborough Street is a destination for students, fans and families. It is one of the four thoroughfares that radiate out from the State Capitol, the other three being Halifax Street, Fayetteville Street, and New Bern Avenue.
Route Description
Hillsborough Street begins at an overpass of I-40 as a continuation of Cary's East Chatham Street. The three lane road runs parallel to a pair of railroad tracks traveling due east through a predominantly residential area. At a complex intersection with Western Boulevard, Jones Franklin, and Buck Jones Roads, Hillsborough abruptly turns to the north and crossing under the railroad tracks. The roadway is then joined by NC 54 at the eastern terminus of Chapel Hill Road, transitioning to commercial development as it approaches Dorton Arena, the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, and I-440. NC 54 ends at the 440 interchange while Hillsborough Street continues east past Meredith College and the north campus of North Carolina State University through a mix of residential and commercial development. Entering Downtown Raleigh at the Saint Mary's School campus, Hillsborough sees a mixture of historic buildings and recently constructed office towers as it approaches its eastern terminus at Salisbury Street.
