Route Description
NC 54 begins at I-440 in Raleigh and travels west along two-lane Hillsborough Street. NC 54's development consists mostly of large industries, which lie on the opposite side of a railroad track that runs parallel to the south of the roadway. Major points of interest along the way include Dorton Arena and the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. Half a mile to the west, NC 54 forks onto Chapel Hill Road, continuing through another industrial area and paralleling the same railroad track. The roadway then widens to four lanes at an interchange with I-40, leaving the city of Raleigh and entering the town of Cary. NC 54 follows Chapel Hill Road for another mile before bypassing Downtown Cary via Manyard Road. Northwest of downtown, NC 54 returns to Chapel Hill Road and continues northwest through a residential and later commercial part of Cary. At Cary Parkway, NC 54 crosses into Morrisville,
