Description of Work
Cliff Short is a well known artist in the San Lorenzo Valley; his carved redwood sculptures can be seen on almost every block, and he has owned and worked out of Shorts Studio on Highway 9 in Felton for over 30 years. Before coming to the area he was a sculptor on movie sets in Hollywood for MGM and Fox. He worked on a variety of sets including, "The Planet of the Apes," “Irma La Douce,” “The King and I,” and “Harold and Maude.” His work can also be seen outside of the San Lorenzo Valley at the Shadowbrook and Severino's Bar & Grill, and he carved the wood seals at the County Government Center. In 2003, A 700 pound redwood bench Short had carved for Rocky's Cafe in Felton was stolen before it had been there for very long, and currently the bull he carved for Felton Covered Bridge Park sits with one horn less due to thieves. Both events testify to the gorgeous quality of woods and excellent artistry Short uses, though that type of attention is misquided at best.
