Emma McCrary (Dec. 25, 1930-June 24, 2011) was a local writer and nature enthusiast who made her mark on the area by building miles of trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains alone on horseback. Lost Camp and the Lost Empire Trail are named after her experiences there, and other trails she had a major role in building include the Wheel, the Cabin and Zane Grey trails in Wilder Ranch State Park; the Big Ben Trail, Escape Trail and Spur Trail in Fall Creek; and the U-Con Trail connecting UCSC and Rincon Road. She was married to Homer 'Bud' McCrary, the co-owner of Big Creek Lumber, for 62 years.
