The San Carlos Cathedral is the oldest building in the city. It was built in 1794.
Monterey was once famous for sardines, especially after the 1945 novel "Cannery Row." Monterey renamed Ocean View Avenue to "Cannery Row" in 1958. The canneries are gone. The cannery buildings have become shops for the tourist industry. While overfishing was part of the reason for the decline of the sardine industry, it has been discovered that sardines —a term used for several fish in the herring family— have a boom and bust cycle every 40 years. Monterey still has a fishing industry.
Tourism is important to the city of Monterey, and is considered a major industry.

Amtrak has a train station at Tyler at Del Monte in Monterey. Tickets cannot be purchased at the Monterey station nor can luggage be checked in at the Monterey station.
