New Brighton State Beach is just a 10 minute drive away from downtown Santa Cruz. Take HWY 1 and take the Park Avenue Exit. go South on Park Avenue, turn LEFT onto McGregor Drive and look for a turn with a sign for New Brighton State Beach.
The beach area is usually lightly populated with campers and day visitors and a great place to watch the sunset. Watch out for three day weekends and heavy summer summer traffic though. The park becomes inundated with people and less pleasant for a day or weekend trip.
New Brighton also has $3/person hiker/biker camp sites that are great if you are cycling on your way to Monterey or Big Sur.
