Sumitomo Bank operated a U.S.-based subsidiary, Sumitomo Bank of California, founded in 1952 as a commercial lending institution catering to Asians. Sumitomo Bank came to Santa Cruz county by buying the Watsonville branch of Bank of California in 1977 or 1978. (Sumitomo Bank first appeared in the county phone book in 1978.) The U.S. subsidiary was put up for sale in 1997. It had 48 branches in California. In 1998 the parent company of California Bank & Trust bought the California branches. The Watsonville branch was later sold to First National Bank in 2002. Since First National Bank already had a branch on Main Street in Watsonville, this branch at 558 Main Street was closed. You can see a photo of the building (as it looked in 2011) at Former Bank Buildings listing.
Although they closed their subsidiary, Sumitomo Bank of California, Sumitomo still has a presence in California. Since 2001 their name is Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). They are the second largest bank in Japan in terms of assets. Sumitomo is a family name.
