2008-07-17 22:32:01 Wow, it's great to have a GREAT steakhouse in the Capitola area. Don't be fooled by the address, this place is only two blocks off 41st Avenue. Having visited the Portola House, the former establishment at this location, several times over the last 20 years and never really impressed, my wife and I ordered our first dinner at the new The Point Chop House & Lounge with low expectations. From the new decor, to the salad and on to the delicious steaks we loved it! The steaks - she had the Petite Sirloin and I had the New York with Shrimp Scampi (loved those capers!) were great cuts of meat and cooked perfectly. We are done driving to downtown Santa Cruz for steak...not with the best steakhouse in the county right here in Capitola. Goodbye and good riddance to the old Portola House...welcome and long live the new The Point Chop House! —69.107.8.121

Capitola, CA 4 star rating08/08/2008 I am a mid-westerner that has an occasional yearning for good quality beef and a potato, and this place was a delightful find. The price was reasonable (under $20 for a full prime rib dinner) and everything was well-prepared. Everything from the bread to the side of veggies and the surprisingly good key lime pie was excellent, as was the beef. Even the coffee was good. The waitstaff were surprising attractive, friendly, and competent. It would have gotten 5 stars but for the dark atmosphere: a combo of rathskellar, strip club, and casket kind of rolled into one. I would definitely prefer something musically besides the same country song stuck on repeat. However, there is a plan for remodelling the restaurant area. The lounge is brighter and looks like it was already updated. I'll be back for the excellent food and service.

2009-02-25 21:13:14 We went here just recently, looking for a new restaurant to try in Santa Cruz, and we were surprised to find that it is now called The Point Bar and Grill!
We had great service and the food was pretty good. We ordered the sampler plate and I endorse everything on there! We ordered a steak to share and asked for medium rare and it was perfect. The vegetables were cooked to perfection (slightly crispy still, not overdone).
The drinks were FABULOUS! my hats off to the bartendress:) The wine list was reasonably priced and had good options to choose from.
One side of the restaurant is a lounge with an intimate setting that looks out to the West so you can see the sun set from your cushy red vinyl booth.
The other side of the restaurant is just a typical restaurant, nothing fancy.
The service was stellar, not too attentive, and definitely observant.
I will definitely be going back!
