An unincorporated area, by law, is a place that has no local governance over itself, but relies on the county, state, and federal administration. While this would typically be farmland, it also includes state parks, county properties, and settlements beyond a township border. While such an area may be known by the name used for a Census Designated Place or the postal designation, the boundaries are often different. The entire county of Santa Cruz that is not covered by an incorporated city or town is an unincorporated area.
