They produced ice used for processing and shipping of fruit and vegetable grown in Santa Cruz, and for the ice boxes of businesses and residents back in the days before refrigerators.
The former Union Ice Company building was destroyed by a fire in 1990 that was started by homeless people who were hanging out in the building.
