UC Santa Cruz is one of the 10 University of California campuses. Located on the westside of Santa Cruz, California, it is the second largest UC campus as far as acreage goes, following UC Davis, but with its current enrollment of just over 15,000 students, it is the third smallest with regards to enrollment. Undergraduates pursue course work in 63 majors, 35 minors, and 52 concentrations in the fields of Arts, Engineering, Humanities, Physical & Biological Sciences, Social Sciences; and graduate students work toward master's degrees, doctoral degrees, and graduate certificates in 34 academic fields. UCSC is the single largest employer in Santa Cruz County, with over 4,300 staff.
The campus was created from land that was part of Cowell Ranch. In 1973 the Cowell Ranch structures earned Landmark Status by the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. the Cowell Ranch buildings were added to the Santa Cruz Historic Building Survey in 1976. On November 21, 2007 the Cowell Ranch was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Apart from the University's three quarters of instruction, UC Santa Cruz also offers two summer sessions, each lasting five weeks and offering the same amount of credit as a full 10-week quarter of instruction. Summer session has tended to be less popular than a regular 10-week session. During summer, the faculty of professors tend to not teach classes, and instead the University hires graduate students to instruct the summer session classes.
